Wealth Composition & Ask Strategy - 27th April 2027
Date: 27th April 2027
Time: 2.00pm-3.30pm UK / 9.00am-10.30pm ET
Duration: 1 hr 30min (60min content + 30min Q&A)
Format: Live Online
Course Type: On The Pulse
For: Researchers, Fundraisers, Directors - UK, US, International
Overview
Business owners are the main source of transformational gifts. Most millionaires are self-made, and almost every name on a recent UK rich list owns a business. But owner wealth rarely sits in a bank account waiting to be given. It’s tied up in shares, partnerships, funds and holding companies, and each of these releases money on its own timetable. And alongside owners sit high earners, whose wealth builds through bonuses, share awards and incentive plans rather than ownership.
This session explains how wealth is made up for different types of major donor. It covers the misconceptions we see most often in philanthropy teams, and how to turn that understanding into asks that are better timed and better sized.
What The Session Will Cover
PLC Owners
Why being a big shareholder doesn’t automatically mean being cash rich. We cover the difference between owner founders and owner directors, how to split wealth into liquid and illiquid, how to calculate dividend income, and how to track share sales, lock-in periods and long-term incentive plans through annual reports and US filings.LTD Owners
Why you shouldn’t dismiss small companies, or companies with negative financials or no turnover. We look at company size thresholds and what they let owners leave out, how to uncover “hidden” dividends from retained profits, what drives value in different sectors, and the warning signs that a sale may be coming.LLP Owners
Why not all partners are equal. We go from salaried partners to full equity and founding partners, covering how profit share is distributed, when bonuses are typically paid, and what buy-in and exit values mean for capacity.Fund Owners
Why investment funds, hedge funds, private equity and venture capital each need a different approach. We compare bonuses with carried interest, look at fund lifecycles, and show how to use public filings to gauge a fund’s size and activity.Holding Companies & Ultimate Owners
Why “all roads lead to Rome” is a trap. We explain why holding companies often show zero turnover, how to trace the true owner through cross-holdings and dividend flows, and how to tell who the right person to focus on actually is.High Earners (Non-Owners)
Not every major donor owns the business. Senior executives, directors, bankers, fund managers, consultants and other professionals can build significant wealth from pay alone, but they’re often misjudged on base salary. We cover the full remuneration package: salary, annual bonus, deferred bonus, share options and long-term incentive plans. We show how to read remuneration reports to estimate total earnings, when bonuses and share awards typically pay out, and why moments such as a promotion, a move to a new employer, or shares vesting after several years can make an ask especially timely.Ask Strategy
How to map wealth creation moments (bonuses, share vesting, profit share, carried interest, dividends and exits), record key dates in your CRM, and separate liquid from illiquid gift capacity. We also look at giving vehicles that unlock asset-based giving, including founders’ pledges, conditional pledges, blended corporate and personal gifts, and share donations.
